Glucose Tolerance Test
Short Description
A Glucose Tolerance Test blood test or GTT is used to screen for and diagnose type 2 diabetes.
Long Description
A fasting blood glucose test is performed after an 8 to 10 hr fast. Then glucose drink (75gm) is given and blood and urine samples taken every 30 mins for 2 hours.
Above-normal blood glucose levels can be used to diagnose type 2 diabetes or high blood glucose during pregnancy (gestational diabetes).
It may also be useful to measure Insulin levels. Insulin is the hormone produced by the pancreas that moves glucose from the bloodstream into cells.
Special Instructions
Call and book appointment to have samples taken. Fast 8 - 10 hrs prior to sample being taken. Do not consume alcohol 24 hrs before test or cease prescribed medication without consulting your Doctor.
