Thyroid Antibodies
Short Description
This thyroid blood test is used to diagnose autoimmune thyroid disease in cases where thyroid hormones are outside the normal ranges.
Long Description
It is very common for a thyroid disorder to be caused by an autoimmune disease. This occurs when your body creates antibodies which attack its own cells, in this case thyroid cell proteins thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase, which either destroy the thyroid gland or stimulate it to produce more thyroid hormone.
Many people with thyroid symptoms have raised thyroid antibodies. Sometimes, however, thyroid antibodies can be elevated before thyroid hormone levels are affected. If thyroid antibodies are detected but thyroid hormone levels are normal you should monitor your hormone levels regularly. If your thyroid function deteriorates later and you become symptomatic treatment can then begin.
