Electrolytes are positively and negatively charged molecules called ions, that are found within the body's cells and extracellular fluids, including blood plasma. They are important because they are what your cells (especially nerve, heart, muscle) use to maintain voltages across their cell membranes and to carry electrical impulses (nerve impulses, muscle contractions) across themselves and to other cells.
Your kidneys work to keep the electrolyte concentrations in your blood constant despite changes in your body. Typically, tests for electrolytes measure levels of sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate in the body. An electrolyte test is rarely tested without the advice of a doctor or other healthcare practitioner beforehand.

Urea is waste product produced as the body digests protein and is carried by the blood to the kidneys, which filter the urea out of the blood and into the urine. The urea test examines how well the kidneys are functioning.
Sodium is both an electrolyte and mineral. It helps regulate the water (inside and outside the body's cells) and electrolyte balance of the body. Sodium is also important in how nerves and muscles work.
Potassium is essential to regulate how the heart beats. It also helps move nutrients into cells and waste products out of cells and influences how nerves and muscles communicate.
Chloride, like sodium, helps maintain a balance of fluids in the body.
